When I started work on this piece, I was contemplating heaven, hell, and our corporeal existence which was quite extraordinary for a secular man. As I developed the work, my focus quickly turned toward our physical lives on Earth and how humans, all of us as a species, have exacted a terrible toll on our small, rocky planet with its thin veneer of atmosphere that, until now, has protected us from the chaos of space.
